When Should You Get Moss Removed From Your Roof?

A little moss is common on Staffordshire roofs, especially on north facing slopes. The time to act is when it starts to build up, hold water or find its way into your gutters.

Signs it's time to act

If you can see any of these from the ground, your roof is worth a closer look.

  • Thick cushions of moss along tile edges
  • Moss lifting or sitting between tiles
  • Gutters filling with clumps of moss after rain
  • Dark streaks or lichen spreading across the roof

Why it matters

Moss acts like a sponge. It holds moisture against your tiles and, as it grows, it can wash into gutters and downpipes and cause blockages and overflows.

What happens during a roof clean

Every roof is different, so I start by checking the roof covering and its condition. The cleaning method is chosen to suit your tiles, then moss is cleared, debris is collected and gutters are cleared of anything that falls during the job.

A biocide treatment afterwards helps slow regrowth. Optional roof coating is available for homeowners who want extra protection.
